Trouble on the Long Old Road
Mazek Velderer Stormleaf
Lawful Neutral Half-Elf Ranger/Wizard Sage
Dr. Mazek Velderer Stormleaf, a 24-year-old Half-Elf Ranger/Wizard hybrid, is currently a Professor of Harmonic Magyk at the Guthix Akademy of Balance. His specialization is in magyk within nature, an interest that stems from his background as a Ranger of Old Timberland. Dr. Stormleaf is a veteran of the 117th Stout Rangers of the Old Timberland Defense Force. He most notably fought in the Thundering Forest campaign of the Great Forest War, a brutal but short-lived conflict between Old Timberland and the neighboring forces of Goblins and Orcs which saw much of his homeland destroyed, including the pillaging of Northhollow, the town in which Stormleaf was born, and the capital of Old Timberland. At the conclusion of the Great Forest War, and the loss of many fellow Rangers, Stormleaf retired from service and entered into the Guthix Akademy of Balance at the age of 18. Three years later, Stormleaf received his Ph.D. in Magyk with a focus in Harmonic Magyk. Immediately following this, Stormleaf accepted the position of Professor of Harmonic Magyk at the Guthix Akademy of Balance. He regularly joins adventures during breaks in teaching. These adventures have the goal of expanding Stormleaf’s knowledge of the interaction between Magyk and Nature, and very rarely are intended to net him a profit of any kind (besides the occasional magical item, of course). Stormleaf lives in Marion with his pet wolf, Matias, in one of the towers located in the main building for the Guthix Akademy of Balance. Generally regarded as a loner, Stormleaf is often seen wandering the streets of Marion, talking to his wolf, and often with various amounts of books floating behind him on a Tenser’s Floating Disk (there are even rumors that he was once seen with an entire desk following behind him, but such rumors have never been proven). He enjoys the company of other Half-Elves and Gnomes on his adventures, and dislikes traveling in huge parties, as he sees them as a disturbance to the tranquility of nature. At home in both the bustling streets of Marion and the forests spread across the world, both of which he can easily blend in to, Stormleaf is an adventurer dedicated to both the magical and natural world.
Early Life (Birth to Age Twelve)
Mazek Velderer Stormleaf was born to a human father, named Mentshlekh Stormlake, and elven mother, named Shretl Hollowleaf, in the city of Northhollow. In Northhollow, it is customary for children to have a surname that takes the first portion from the younger parent’s surname and the second portion from the older parent’s surname. This custom was created in order to symbolize the unity of two families into one. Because of this, family houses very rarely exist in Northhollow, and when they do, are passed down by sigil instead of last name. Families are then referred to by their sigil, and not their surname. The lack of houses being created leads to less conflict in Northhollow, and as such, Northhollow is a relatively peaceful city. As a child, Stormleaf excelled at activities that required dexterity and intelligence. He was known as an adventurous child, willing to go off into the woods and explore for hours on end, very often skipping school to read alone in the outer forest (the trees that surround Northhollow and are usually off limits to children). It was these numerous forays into the outer forest that developed the passion for nature in Stormleaf, and the books fostered a deep understanding of Magyk. Stormleaf had two brothers, Zelner Stormleaf, who was older by 4 years, and Galekh Stormleaf, who was younger by 2 years. While Mazek was out in the outer forest, Zelner was in Northhollow working as a blacksmith’s apprentice, and Galekh was entering into school, destined to be a Cleric. Mazek’s increasing apathy towards school, coupled with his rapid advancement past the level of lessons provided at schools in Northhollow, led to his parents sending him to Marion at the age of 12 to seek higher levels of education in his areas of interest.
Teenage Years (Age Thirteen to Age Sixteen)
Upon his arrival in Marion, Mazek was enrolled at the Guthix School of General Magyks, the precursor to the Guthix Akademy of Balance. Excelling at his schoolwork, Mazek was finally in an academic environment that he could thrive in, and began to refine his knowledge of both Magyk and Nature. After a year at the Guthix School of General Magyks, Mazek was given an apprenticeship with the former Professor of Harmonic Magyk, Dr. Vog Wizbomb, a Gnome Wizard nearing retirement (and needing retirement, in the humble opinion of this biographer). This apprenticeship is assumed to be what led to Mazek’s friendliness towards Gnomes, and would last for three years. Throughout the apprenticeship, Mazek and Vog travelled throughout the lands surrounding Marion, visiting countless magical landmarks and cities, along with numerous natural phenomena. Mazek also spent six months, starting at age fourteen, studying at the Old Spyre, spending most days reading and meditating in the nearby forests in order to develop the deep connection with nature that is needed for Harmonic Magyk. Upon the completion of the six months, Mazek received his Arcane Focus, a wand made from a tree that he had to cut down with Magyk. The wand is able to bind to any wooden items it is placed on, such as a bow or shield, making it more practical to carry and hide if need be. After receiving his Arcane Focus, Mazek returned to Marion with Vog to complete his apprenticeship at age fifteen. Mazek would then spend the next year travelling to various points of interest, always in search of a new magical relic or lost city, constantly taking notes. It is estimated that Mazek sustained an average of one notebook per week of notes during this year, and a compendium of the notes from his year-long travels is rumored to exist and be kept in either his tower or the library underneath the Guthix Akademy of Harmonic Magyk. It is not known if this compendium has ever been read by anyone besides Mazek, but it is reasonable to assume that his mentor Vog was allowed to read these notes. When Mazek returned to Marion at the end of his year-long adventure, he was surprised to see his brothers Zelner and Galekh waiting for him.
Start of the Great Forest War (Age Sixteen to Age Seventeen)
Mazek’s brothers told him of the surprise attack launched by the Goblin and Orc armies of the Kingdom of Greshnik. The Greshnik armies had invaded Old Timberland, and swiftly destroyed the towns of Mallowbrook and Watermeadow, killing hundreds. The inhabitants of Old Timberland quickly called up the soldiers of Old Timberland Defense Force (OTDF for short), a rather small force, but known for its skill at fighting off both Goblins and Orcs. While the OTDF was able to stem the flow of Goblins and Orcs into Old Timberland, their numbers were slowly depleted by the ever increasing number of Goblins and Orcs. The battle of Marshton was particularly devastating, with the OTDF losing 15% of able bodied soldiers, and the city of Marshton, an OTDF stronghold. As the casualties piled up, all citizens of Old Timberland were called upon to help in the war effort in any way they could. Thus, Zelner and Galekh recruited Mazek to return to Northhollow and join the OTDF. Once he arrived in Northhollow, Mazek entered into training for the OTDF Rangers, a collection of specially trained and skilled soldiers known for their unconventional strategies and their use of nature to their advantage. Mazek’s knowledge and connection to both Nature and Magyk led to a swift promotion, and command of 16 other Rangers. This group of Rangers became the 117th Stout Rangers, trained in the art of stealth while wearing heavier armor, such as Scale Mail. This group consisted of Mazek Stormleaf, the leader, 6 swordsmen (three of which were Human, Osbert Spalding, Rayburn Preston, Maeve Twynam; two of which were Half-Orcs, Zaadall, Urthatar, and Aggum; one of which was a Dark Elf, Idrrius Davovayn). 4 archers (one of which was a Human, Vlamzandaulm Urnimzirga; one of which was a Half-Orc, Renizall; one of which was a Dragonborn, Kilbor; one of which was a Tiefling, Redemption), 2 wizards (one of which was a Halfling, Aramin Lightfoot; one of which was a Eladrin, Caeglyn), and finally, 2 clerics (one of which was a Dwarf, Hjolmund; and one of which was a Half-Elf and Mazek’s Brother, Galekh). Upon creation of this unit, the 117th Stout Rangers were deployed to the Western Front, only one year into the Great Forest War.
